Lake Tekapo: Day 22 — Turquoise Water, Alpine Light, and Silence That Feels Almost Sacred

From Christchurch we continued inland to Lake Tekapo.

The unusual colour of the lake is striking even from a distance. The water appears almost turquoise, caused by fine glacial particles suspended in it.

Church of the Good Shepherd

Right on the lakeshore stands the small Church of the Good Shepherd, one of the most photographed landmarks in the region.

The church is simple, but its position directly on the water with a view of the mountains makes the spot special.

Time at the Lake

The area around the lake is well suited for a walk. The water is clear and the landscape wide and open.

For children there is plenty of room along the shore to play and throw stones into the water.

Tekapo Springs

Tekapo Springs is located above the lake and has several warm pools with views of the mountains.

After several days on the road, it’s a very relaxing place to stop.
