Leigh & Tawharanui: Day 3 — First Proper Driving Day
After two days in Auckland, it was time to truly set off. This was our first proper driving day in New Zealand — and the first morning where campervan life felt familiar rather than new.
Leaving Auckland – The Road Begins
We packed without rushing. When travelling by campervan, departure is just part of the daily routine: checking water tanks, unplugging power, storing groceries so nothing slides around in the cupboards on the way. Everyone took on a small task.
The drive north to Leigh is straightforward and scenic — about 1.5 hours, depending on traffic. The further we got from Auckland, the more the landscape opened up: rolling green hills, sheep, and wide skies.
Leigh Central Accommodation & Motorhome Park
We stayed at Leigh Central Accommodation, Function Centre & Motorhome Park — small, relaxed, and uncomplicated.
Note: Leigh Central has no playground, which is worth knowing for families with young children.
Tawharanui Marine Reserve – First Real Beach Moment
Tawharanui felt a little like a reward. The drive in takes you through farmland before the view suddenly opens up to white sand and turquoise water.
The beach feels quiet and spacious. The sand is pale and soft, the water clear.
We spent several hours there:
- running through the waves
- building sandcastles
At some point we realised we’d stopped looking at the clock.
Goose Bakery – A Quick Stop in Matakana
On the way back we stopped in Matakana at Goose Bakery, a local bakery.
Pies are a classic New Zealand road trip food — hearty, filling, and quick to grab, especially with kids in tow.
What surprised us, though, was the bread: proper German-style loaves, dense and crusty — something you rarely find in New Zealand. An unexpected find. The bakery was busy, relaxed, and full of locals — usually a good sign.
Tip: If you’re in the area on a Saturday morning, check out the Matakana Farmers Market — a lovely local market with fresh produce, food stalls, and a relaxed atmosphere. A great first taste of New Zealand life.
Family Travel Notes – Day 3

- Auckland to Leigh: about 1.5 hours
- Roads are well maintained but can be winding in parts
Accommodation
Tawharanui
- Bring water and snacks
- Sunscreen is essential — UV radiation in New Zealand is very strong
- There are basic facilities, but few shops nearby
Restaurants & Cafes
Groceries Best not to stock up in Auckland itself — stop at the next big Pak’nSave or New World instead. In Leigh, there are only small stores with limited selection.
