Lake Pukaki & Mount Cook: Day 23 — Alpine Roads and Hooker Valley
From Lake Tekapo, one of the most scenic roads on the South Island leads to Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park.
Shortly after leaving Tekapo you reach Lake Pukaki, whose water appears an even more intense turquoise.
Lake Pukaki
Several viewpoints along the road offer an unobstructed view across the lake. In good weather you can already see the snow-capped Mount Cook at the far end of the road.
The contrast between the blue water and the white peaks is particularly striking.
Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park
The Mount Cook National Park has several short walks that are manageable with children.
A popular option is the Hooker Valley Track, which crosses suspension bridges and follows a glacial river.
