Waitomo: Day 12 — Drifting Under Thousands of Glowworms

The glowworms are genuinely cool — thousands of tiny blue-green lights covering the cave ceiling, glowing in the darkness. It’s a unique natural phenomenon and worth seeing.

That said, be prepared: the actual boat ride through the glowworm grotto lasts only around 5–10 minutes. For the price and build-up, the tour feels a bit short and overrated overall. The experience is memorable, but expectations should be managed.

We stayed at Waitomo TOP 10 Holiday Park — a comfortable base before and after the cave experience. The glowworm tour is guided and suitable for families; the boat section is in near-darkness, with only the soft blue-green light of the glowworms above.

What Waitomo Gave Us

A reminder that some of the best moments in travel are quiet ones.

No adrenaline. No crowds. Just wonder.

And the next day — Kaimiro — we carried that calm with us.
