Milford Sound: Day 27 — Fjords, Waterfalls, and Sheer Rock Walls

The trip to Milford Sound is one of the most famous experiences on the South Island.

Even the drive from Te Anau is a highlight in itself. The road winds through Fiordland, past lakes, valleys, and dense forests.

The Drive Through Fiordland National Park

The route from Te Anau to Milford Sound takes around two hours, but many travellers take considerably longer as there are numerous viewpoints along the way.

Well-known stops include:

  • Mirror Lakes
  • The Chasm
  • Homer Tunnel

Boat Tour on Milford Sound

On Milford Sound itself we took a boat tour through the fjord.

The sheer rock walls rise straight out of the water, and in many places waterfalls cascade down from the mountains. Depending on the weather, the waterfalls can be particularly powerful.

During the cruise you often spot seals or dolphins as well.
