Te Anau: Day 26 — Stopover Before Milford Sound

After Wānaka, our route continued towards Fiordland National Park. Our destination was Te Anau, a small town on the lake of the same name.

For us, Te Anau was mainly a practical stopover before driving to Milford Sound. Many travellers stay here overnight to make an early start into Fiordland National Park the following morning.

Sputnik Playground

Right on the lakefront is the Sputnik Playground, a modern and very well-designed playground.

The playground is generously laid out with a wide range of climbing and play equipment. After several hours in the car, it was the perfect place for our child to burn off some energy.

The location directly on Lake Te Anau adds to the appeal — while the kids play, you have an open view across the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Preparing for Milford Sound

After the stop in Te Anau, we prepared for the drive to Milford Sound the following day.

The road is considered one of the most scenic in New Zealand, and many travellers set off early in the morning for that reason.
